When it comes to creating a calm, beautiful home, these four words often get used interchangeably but they actually mean very different things. Understanding the difference can help you work smarter (not harder!) and keep your home stress free.

Decluttering: Letting Go of What You Don’t Need

Definition: Decluttering is the process of removing items from your home that you no longer use, love, or need. It’s about making decisions, what stays, what goes, and what gets donated.

Example: Going through your closet and letting go of jeans that no longer fit, shoes you never wear, or duplicates of kitchen gadgets.

Tip: Designate three sites to place items. If decluttering a garage you can do this by laying out three different tarps. Label each one "keep", "throw away", and "donate." The same can be done for rooms inside the home. This will help make this process easier. Move through the space one object at a time!

Organizing: Giving Everything a Home

Definition: Organizing happens after decluttering. It’s creating systems so everything you keep has a place to live. Organizing makes daily life easier because you know exactly where to find things.

Example: Using clear bins in the pantry with labels for “Snacks,” “Cereal,” and “Baking Supplies.” Or setting up a basket by the door for keys and mail.

Tip: Keep similar things together. Use clear containers and labels to keep things organized. Give everything a home.

Tidying: Daily Reset

Definition: Tidying is the everyday act of putting things back in their homes. It’s the quick reset that keeps your space looking pulled together without deep effort.

Example: Fluffing couch pillows, folding blankets after family movie night, or clearing toys into bins at the end of the day.

Tip: Each night set a timer for 20 minutes and focus on "tidying up." Walk around each room and place things back into their home.

Cleaning: Removing Dirt and Grime

Definition: Cleaning is about health and hygiene. It’s scrubbing, dusting, washing, and sanitizing. Cleaning keeps your home fresh, safe, and sparkling.

Example: Vacuuming rugs, wiping kitchen counters with disinfectant, or scrubbing the bathtub.

Tip: This can be broken down. Somethings like disinfecting the kitchen counter should be done everyday and as needed. Other things, like vacuuming can be done every few days. Make a cleaning list for everyday of the week to help stay on task.

Why This Matters

When you understand the difference, home care feels less overwhelming:

  • Decluttering clears space.

  • Organizing gives structure.

  • Tidying maintains order.

  • Cleaning keeps it fresh and healthy.

Together, we can transform your space into a beautifully organized home.

Tip: Don’t try to do everything at once. Start small and build momentum. You got this!!!
